the best lures / rigs for ice fishing walleye | Ohio Game Fishing

  1. I was hoping some of the experienced ice fisherman would share some info on the best lures or rigs to use for walleye on lake erie.

  2. I have always done well with swedish pimples, Buckshot spoons, and jigging raps tipped with a couple of minnows.

  3. The last year we had good ice on Erie I was using Sebile Vibratos and they were on fire. Swedish Pimples and Buckshot’s, Cicadas, Vibe’s,jigging Raps, about all seem to have their days. I usually tip with shiners as well. Colors are always an experiment. Vexilar or a good flasher is a must!!!!

  4. White or pearl 3-4 inch tubes with a center balanced jighead inside are a dynamite sleeper bait for vertically jigging walleye. Equally effective in open water or through the ice. Examples of center balanced jigheads….H Style, Bullet, Glider, tube n’ tail…etc. When jigged, the tube will dart off to the side and circle back to center. Much like a jigging rapala does.

  5. Silver streak (wolverine tackle) Makes the rattle streak. It comes in many great fish catching colors and sizes.

I have realized the last couple years,to be able to hangvwith everyone else a vex,or flasher,or anything to mark your bait an the depth an the fish is a must.
Im not there yet so i stick to shallow water an panfish.
And id be after saugeye wich are notorious for hugging bottom, but even they seem to like to have to chase the bait up to eat.

As for baits it seems the spoons with a bend in them are awfull good for saugeyes,an vibes as well

Ive caught over 150 saugeye this year threw the ice on Indian with no electronics. This is my home lake, and I know it very well so that helps. If you fish shallow lakes, you can catch saugeyes with great consistency without a electronic unit!
