Devon is one of England’s most scenic and beautiful counties and also offers some brilliant fishing locations for all anglers of all abilities. Whether it be the jaw dropping cliffs, beautiful sandy beaches or hidden harbours Devon has the fishing for you.
As with every county I have handpicked the areas that offer the biggest variety of fishing options, whilst being close to large towns for access and convenience,these include;
Exmouth: Large amounts of the Devonshire coast are dominated by high cliffs and large estuaries. Sitting at the mouth of the river Ex is Exmouth. This charming town is at the heart of a fantastic fishing area with good all year round venues and species to be caught for anglers of all abilities and targeting all sorts of fish. I have picked a list of some of my favourite locations close to this area.
Sidmouth: Sidmouth is a town situated on the English Channel coast in Devon, South West England,14 miles to the east of Exeter. Sidmouth lies at the mouth of the River Sid in a valley between Peak Hill to the west and Salcombe Hill to the east. It is surrounded by the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site and the South West Coast Path. Sidmouth offers a wide variety of fishing close to the town and in the surrounding areas.
Torquay: Poole homes the world’s second largest natural harbour. This allows for some fantastic fishing locations. The bass, mullet and flounder fishing is some of the best anywhere. The area also allows a tremendous variety of fishing. Studland is a beautiful stretch of beach, owned by the National Trust, with the iconic Old Harrys Rocks to the West and the mouth of Poole Harbour to the East. All in all this is an excellent place to come fishing, and is where I have caught several of my personal best fish.
Plymouth: The Purbeck area of Dorset is famous for specimen size fish. Whether it be large congers, bass or winter Cod the beaches of the Purbeck coast, with their spectacular scenery offer a tremendous amount to the shore angler. With the majority of the coastline being high cliff tops fishing on to ruff rocky ground fishing can be a challenge. This however is one of my favourite places to fish, and it is of particular interest for my shore lure fishing with marks such as Kimmeridge and Durlston often producing. I have given my top venues below and trust they will be well received.
North Devon Coast: Weymouth and Portland are fantastic fishing areas. The area has fantastic beaches awesome harbours and incredible rock fishing locations all of which produce great fish. Portland itself holds the British record for Wrasse and Chesil boasts several other shore caught records. With the Olympics having been in the town the profile of this area is only going to increase so give the area a go soon for some excellent sport.
